Try Kayak

This isn’t a class in the strictest sense, but more like an opportunity to go kayaking supervised by an instructor on a protected body of water.  This can be a great way to find out if kayaking is something that you would like to pursue further.  Your instructor can help you understand the differences between recreational, sea, and whitewater kayaks and the equipment and give basic instruction on getting in and out of the boats, how to hold and use the paddle, and performing basic strokes.  The majority of this 2-hour experience will be spent paddling.  No previous paddling experience is required.

Fee:   $55  (includes kayak, paddle, & life jacket)

Recreational Kayaking Basics

This class is designed for people who have already purchased a recreational kayak (under 14′ long, over 25″ wide, large cockpit opening with minimal flotation) or those who are certain that they only want to paddle on small lakes and slow-moving rivers.  In 2.5-hours we will cover the basic strokes needed to maneuver your kayak efficiently.  Students will not be asked to perform a wet exit, and no re-entry skills are taught in this class.  Recreational kayaks are not suitable for use on waters where these skills would be necessary such as the Great Lakes, whitewater, or large lakes and rivers.  This class can be taken as a first basic introduction to the sport.  However, if you have not yet purchased a kayak and have paddled very few different boats, you are strongly encouraged to consider taking the “Introduction to Sea Kayaking” class as it gives a more comprehensive introduction to the sport of kayaking.

Skills and Information Covered in this Class

  • Introduction of equipment – kayaks, paddles, life jackets
  • Safety considerations for using recreational kayaks
  • Entering and exiting a kayak
  • Forward stroke
  • Reverse stroke
  • Stopping a kayak
  • Forward and reverse sweep strokes for turning
  • Draw strokes to move a kayak sideways
  • Lifting and carrying a kayak
  • Stern rudder stroke (if time permits)

Introduction to Sea Kayaking

This course is the best choice for a first kayaking experience for those who are serious about getting the best start in kayaking.  Absolutely no previous paddling experience is required to take this class.  This class will give students a broad introduction to the sport providing a solid basis upon which to make future decisions regarding your participation and equipment purchases.  Students will use touring/sea kayaks  which are longer (over 14′) and narrower (under 25″) than recreational kayaks, and are better suited to paddling longer distances on larger bodies of water.  Classes take place on protected water – mostly inland lakes – but for those who aspire to paddle on the Great Lakes or oceans, this course is the first step in acquiring the skills necessary to paddle on these waters.  Classes meet for 6 hours on one day.  Time on the water is approximately 3.5-4 hours broken up into 2 sessions.  The remaining time is spent learning skills on shore including a lunch break.

Students will practice safety skills that involve capsize and full immersion in water.  Wetsuits are available for students where water is less than 70°F such as in spring and early summer or on Lake Michigan.  If you wish to use a wetsuit for classes when temperatures are above 70°, please request when registering.

Skills and Information Covered in this Course:

  • Introduction to equipment-kayak, paddle, life jacket, and other accessories
  • Making adjustments to a kayak to improve fit and performance

Introduction to Moving Water

If you will be doing the bulk of your paddling on rivers or have an interest in moving on to whitewater, this course is designed to introduce the concepts of “reading” the water and understanding the physics of currents.  The first portion of the class is taught on flatwater with little or no current.  In the second half of the class, students will be paddling in moving water (class I).  It is recommended that students have taken previous instruction such as “Recreational Kayaking Basics” or “Introduction to Sea Kayaking” to develop basic paddling skills before taking this course.  This class is generally taught using kayaks, but canoes and SUPs can be accommodated by prior arrangement.

Skills and Information Covered in this Course:

  • Basic kayak strokes for maneuvering (forward, reverse, sweeps, draw)
  • Edging a kayak
  • Identifying river features (eddy, eddyline, downstream V, upstream V, wave train)
  • Eddy turn, peel-out, and ferry
  • Identifying river hazards
  • Dealing with a capsize
  • River-running strategies
  • Scouting a rapid

Fees:  $75 (includes kayak, paddle, life jacket)   $65 (with your own kayak)
